Xander Schauffele was born on October 25, 1993, in San Diego, California, to parents Chen Ping-Yi and Stefan Schauffele. His mother is originally from Taiwan but spent her childhood in Japan before relocating to the U.S. His father, Stefan, was born in Stuttgart to a French mother and a German father and had aspirations of becoming a decathlete. However, at the age of 20, he was involved in a serious car accident with a drunk driver that ended his athletic career. During his recovery, he developed an interest in golf and eventually moved to the United States, where he worked at a golf academy in San Diego and served as an assistant golf professional in Hawaii.
Xander’s parents met at the United States International University in San Diego in 1988 and married three months later. They initially moved to Germany, where Xander’s older brother Nico was born, before returning to San Diego.
At the age of nine, Xander was introduced to golf by his father, and they became members of Bernardo Heights Country Club. From that point until he turned 30, Stefan was Xander’s sole swing coach, emphasizing fundamental principles of ball flight and club mechanics. Consequently, Xander did not see his own swing until he was about 18 years old. In November 2023, he began working with Chris Como, who previously coached Tiger Woods and Bryson DeChambeau.
