Phil Mickelson’s Wife Amy Mickelson

Amy Mickelson is one of the most prominent wives on the PGA Tour. A former cheerleader for the Phoenix Suns, she often walks alongside her husband during tournaments and interacts effortlessly with the gallery. In 2004, she was present with their three children at the 18th green of Augusta National when Mickelson secured his first major victory, and she was also there during his heartbreaking loss at the U.S. Open in 2006 at Winged Foot.

A notable photograph in the clubhouse at the Byron Nelson Championship captures a moment from 1996 when Mickelson won the tournament while engaged to Amy.

Describing her character, one person remarked:

“Every time I’ve been around her, she’s always had a smile on her face. She’s always upbeat. She’s a neat girl. Hopefully, it’s early and hopefully, they take care of it. I just sent Phil a text back. I didn’t call him or anything. He’ll call me if he needs anything.”

Phil and Amy first met in 1992 while attending Arizona State University, a year after Phil won his first PGA Tour event as an amateur. At that time, Amy had little knowledge of golf.

The Mickelson family has faced challenges, including health issues. For instance, their daughter Sophia fainted and experienced a minor seizure at school while Phil was competing in the Humana Challenge in La Quinta. In response to this incident, Amy stated:

“It’s been a rough week. But you get through it. She’s been a trouper. She’s held up pretty well.”

Sophia recovered quickly, and Amy reassured everyone that their middle child was doing fine. She remained committed to her plans for the kids to attend the tournament:

“I don’t want this to get out of hand. She’s doing OK. I’m confident in the doctor who I met yesterday who specializes in her situation. We’re figuring it out. For me, the knowledge is a good thing. I don’t like limbo.”

Amy noted that while Phil focuses on his game during tournaments, it has served as a positive distraction for him over recent years, although he does worry about their family’s well-being.

In May 2009, Amy was diagnosed with breast cancer, prompting Phil to suspend his tour schedule to support her through treatment and recovery. Reflecting on her upbringing in a tennis family, she recalled:

“When he told me he was a pro golfer, I thought he worked in the shop at a golf course.”

During her first experience at a golf tournament—the Bob Hope Classic—she expected to walk hand-in-hand with Phil but felt neglected when he did not spend enough time with her. However, as she learned more about the sport, including distinguishing between birdies and bogeys, she became an integral part of his journey through both triumphs and setbacks.

The couple married in 1996 and have three children: Amanda (9), Sophia (7), and Evan (6). Their first child was born just after Phil’s participation in the 1999 U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2, where he carried a pager and promised to leave if Amy went into labor.

Although contractions began on Sunday during the tournament, Amy chose not to inform Phil as he aimed for his first major victory. He ultimately lost by one stroke to Payne Stewart but made it home in time for Amanda’s birth.

Amy’s journey has been marked by resilience and support from friends and family throughout her health challenges and Phil’s career demands.
